Olena was raised in Soviet Union and the game of chess opened many doors for her as a kid. Now being an international chess master she says that chess also helps her manage impact investments at a global philanthropic organisation Luminate.

“Good impact investment is kind of like a good game of chess because you need to understand so many resources. And they are still limited - kind of like pieces in a chess board. But in order to win, you need to understand how all your resources play together.”

Olena leads Luminate's funding activities in Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, Georgia, and the Baltics. To date, the organization has supported 296 organisations in 17 countries with over $378 million in funding. Key areas of impact they focus on include Civic Empowerment, Data & Digital Rights, Financial Transparency, and Independent Media.
